Overview
London is James Bond's base and the birthplace of his creator, Ian Fleming, so there are lots of 007 things to see and do. On this high-octane 1-day itinerary you'll learn what makes a great spy, take in London's sights in a Bond-style speedboat and enjoy oysters with a Martini cocktail at the bar where the expression "shaken, not stirred" was coined.
Morning: Imperial War Museum - Harrods - Afternoon Tea at Grosvenor House Hotel
Imperial War Museum
Nearest tube: Lambeth North
First off, you need to get inside the mindset of Bond, and more importantly his ingenious creator, Ian Fleming. 2008 marks the centenary of the birth of this great author and to celebrate, the Imperial War Museum (www.iwm.org.uk/) in London is producing the first major exhibition devoted to his life and works - For Your Eyes Only.
Running until March 2009, the exhibition features first-time exhibits such as Fleming's desk and chair from his Jamaican home Goldeneye where he wrote the Bond novels, annotated Bond manuscripts and the 'blood-splattered' shirt worn by Daniel Craig in Casino Royale. As well as all that, you'll find out how Fleming's wartime experiences inspired the Bond plots and many of the iconic heroes and villains, such as M and Goldfinger.
Harrods
Nearest tube: Knightsbridge
Even an Aston Martin DBS can't get you through London's mid-day traffic quickly, so jump on the tube to Knightsbridge to visit the most famous department store in the world, Harrods (www.harrods.com). Here you can get a classic bespoke shirt from Tom Ford, who dressed Daniel Craig in Quantum of Solace and from 25 October until 24 December 2008, you can also see the 1960s motor yacht that was used in the Quantum of Solace in the window display.
Grosvenor House for lunch
Nearest tube: Bond Street
Feeling hungry yet? A short walk through the beautiful urban oasis Hyde Park, will bring you out in Mayfair, one of London's most exclusive neighbourhoods and home to the 5-star Grosvenor House, A JW Marriott Hotel. This historic hotel has been catering to royalty, celebrity and no doubt a few secret agents for nearly 80 years. If you're here for lunch, enjoy delicious Anglo-French food in the new BORD'EAUX brassiere inspired by the region of Aquitaine.
If you arrive a little later, it has to be Anna's award-winning Afternoon Tea served in the Park Room lounge. Designed to reflect the style, comfort and charm of a living room in an English stately home, this would definitely be to Bond's taste.
