Prides

Part party, part political rally, Britain's tradition of Pride events is strong, and very long! Their influence and purpose has changed over the years, admittedly – from early exercises in visibility to latter day great afternoons out (for all the family) – the core of Pride remains very much that: an unashamed celebration of who we are.

Manchester Pride (www.manchesterpride.com)
21st -31st August 2009
Eighteen years strong, Manchester's flamboyant celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life offers ten days of music, arts, entertainment, film, sport and partying. As part of the 78 hour 'Big Weekend', make sure you catch the Manchester Pride Parade. A carnival atmosphere will fill the streets of Manchester and enthrall the thousands of spectators - young and old, gay and straight, friends and family, who have come down to see the glamorous and the outrageously fabulous people who take part. For the third year running, Manchester Pride has been voted the Best Pride, Event or Festival by readers of the Pink Paper.

London (www.visitlondon.com/people/gay/)
Soho Pride (www.sohopride.net/)
, date TBC
The younger – and some say prettier! – sibling to London Pride, Soho Pride is a more intimate, but no less crazy-antic'd celebration of who and what we stand for. On usually the penultimate Sunday of August, the high-ways and by-ways around Old Compton Street are fit-to-bursting with LGBTs and their pals, merry on the party atmosphere (as well as other things!).

Scotia Pride Scotland (www.cometoscotland.com/)
Pride Scotia (www.pride-scotia.org/), 27th June 2009 (TBC)
Scotia Pride is Edinburgh's all-encompassing Pride celebration, with an eye very much on diversity and personal identity. With a parade and political rally at its core, Scotia Pride is very much Scotland's ball-busting, sit-up-and-take-notice celebration of gay life.
Wales (www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=47766605107)
Cardiff Mardi Gras (www.cardiffmardigras.co.uk)
, 29th - 30th August 2009
Preferring to call itself Mardi Gras rather that Pride points to the party sensibility at the heart of Wales's main LGBT celebration – yet there's still a sturdy political leaning, namely the ongoing fight against homophobia and for the acceptance of diversity.
